Islamic Jihad: Zikim evacuation a victory

IDF decision to withdraw new recruits from base perceived as triumph by Gaza terror group. 'Our rockets on Zikim and the rest of the region have forced the enemy to flee. This is a massive achievement for the resistance,' says spokesman

"The decision to evacuate recruits from the Zikim base is yet another victory for the Palestinian resistance. Yesterday Erez, tomorrow Zikim – what will be next? I leave that decision to the Israelis," a spokesman for the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad, told Ynet on Monday.

The spokesman, Abu Ahmed, said the new victory proves the Palestinian strategy is working, and that Israelis cannot bear the incessant attacks.

"This is the kind of decision we have never seen before, and this is a massive achievement for the resistance," he said.

The IDF is preparing to stop training new recruits at Zikim within several short months, Ynet reported on Sunday. Army officials stress the decision is unrelated to the threat of Qassam rockets from Gaza, even though the base was struck in the past.

However other, different, troops will be stationed at the base and it will remained manned by the army. The move is part of a program seeking to minimize the number of younger soldiers in the 'archetypal' recruit bases. The new policy would see soldiers being assigned directly to their designated units immediately after being drafted, and those units would also be responsible for their basic training.

"While it's true that this may be preceding an Israeli assault on the Strip, an act aimed at defending Israeli lives. But most chances are that this is another Israeli withdrawal from a military base, as the Israelis have long since understood that they have lost this base, and they are doing this out of concern for the lives of their soldiers," said Abu Ahmed.

The Israelis love to brag about the myth of the Israeli soldier and the IDF, said Abu Ahmed, but "we have long since understood that this is a fantasy, in recent years that story has very little hold in reality. This myth, if it even ever existed, was torn down as they fled from Lebanon and fled from Gaza – when the

Lebanese and Palestinian fighters attacked the enemy and lie waiting for him in ambushes. We took the initiative, and here, it's paid off.

"Today this great big army is leaving its civilians on the front lines while the army becomes the home front. What could be greater proof of how cowardly and faint of heart the Israeli soldier truly is? But most importantly, this is a sign that we are on the road to victory and that the Zionist project is on its way to collapse, defeat and downfall."
