New Israeli film proves popular amongst French audiences

In its first week in French movie theaters, Israeli movie ‘Shiva’ screened before 30,000 viewers. In light of success, local production company decides to distribute additional copies

Ronit and Shlomi Alkabetz’s new film, entitled “Shiva,” has managed to surprise French audiences.

Following the celebratory opening of the movie during the Cannes Critics Choice week, the French production company Les Films Du Losange, which originally distributed 55 copies for commercial screening, decided to distribute 10 more copies.

Israeli movies were distributed on a much larger scale this year with films including “The Band’s Visit” with 145 copies, the “Lemon Tree” with 95 copies and “Waltz with Bashir” with 160 copies.

However, the number of copies of “Shiva” distributed is respectable considering the fact that it is low-budget film, not in French and not Hollywood-produced.

The French media embraced and praised the movie “Shiva” which tells the story of a large family mourning over the loss of one of their children.

The stifling and intensive atmosphere in the home creates a world of impulses, jealously, power struggles and paybacks, revealing the affects of the family unit.

So far, 30,000 people have seen the movie  since its commercial opening in France last Wednesday. Major publicity was allotted this movie with sponsorship from the acclaimed Elle magazine and the music and bookstore chain FNAC.

The movie will be screened in Israel as part of the competition at the Jerusalem International Film Festival and will be shown in nationwide theaters during the upcoming fall season.
