Philharmonic takes on Sydney Opera House

Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra receives first ever invitation to appear as official guests of famous Australian landmark; also set to perform in Thailand this summer

The Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra has been invited to perform at the Sydney Opera House at the end of the month. This will be the orchestra's fifth performance tour in Australia, but marks the first time it has ever been invited as the opera house's official guest.

"The Sydney Opera House is considered the pinnacle of the music industry in the continent and we are delighted with the invitation," said Avi Shoshani, secretary-general of the orchestra. "Over the years the Australian opera house has hosted the philharmonic orchestras of Vienna and Berlin, which are considered leading orchestras, so we are in good company."

The Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra will hold three shows, during which it will perform pieces by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Beethoven, and Mahler. The orchestra will perform Mahler's Symphony no. 3 in Re Minor accompanied by the mezzo-soprano singer Bernadette Cullen, the philharmonic choir, and Sydney's children's choir.

The Australian tour marks another accomplishment soon to be added to the list of famous opera houses the Israeli orchestra has appeared in throughout the world, such as Milan's 'La Scala', New York's 'Metropolitan' and others in Florence and Tokyo.

The orchestra is also scheduled to appear in Thailand as part of Bangkok's annual international music festival, which takes place every summer. The performance will be the orchestra's third appearance at this festival.
