Woody Allen film to open Haifa Festival

'Vicky Cristina Barcelona,' which made its debut in Cannes Festival and hit US screens about two weeks ago, to open 24th international film festival in mid October

Director Woody Allen's new film, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," will open the 24th International Haifa Film Festival on October 14.

 

The movie, which made its debut in the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, stars Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson and Patricia Clarkson. It tells the story of two young American women on a summer holiday in Barcelona and a love triangle created between them, a charismatic artist and his ex-wife.

Some 170 films will be screened at the festival this year, including an impressive representation of movies which took part in the Cannes Festival's official competitions.

 

The most prominent films which will participate in the festival include Laurent Cantet's "The Class," which won the Golden Palm award at Cannes, Matteo Garrone's "Gomorra" which won the Grand Prize of the festival, Nuri Bilge Ceylan's "Three Monkeys," which won the Best Director award, and Kornél Mundruczó's "Delta," which won the Fipresci award presented by the jury of international critics.

 

Paul Schrader's "Adam Resurrected," based on a novel by Israeli writer Yoram Kaniuk, will make its Israeli debut at the Haifa Film Festival. The film's cast includes Jeff Goldblum, Derek Jacobi, Willem Dafoe and Ayelet Zurer.

 

The festival will also include an event in honor of Israeli director, writer and actor Eitan Green, as well as a screening of his new film, "It All Begins at Sea."
