Israeli sex offender tracked down in Argentina

Buenos Aires Police, Interpol lend Israeli authorities hand in locating, apprehending dangerous sex offender who escaped to South American in August. Justice Ministry to begin extradition proceedings within days

An Israeli sex offender who fled to Argentina in August has been apprehended by the Buenos Aires authorities on Monday and is now awaiting extradition.

The man, 40, was convicted of the rape, sodomy and sexual assault of his two daughters, his wife, sister-in-law and another woman; but despite being labeled a dangerous sex offender by the court, he was released to house arrest with severe restrictions.

Once out of custody, the man fled Israel for Argentina using his twin brother's passport. The State Prosecutor's Office International Crimes Division then filed an official extradition motion with Buenos Aires authorities, prompting the latter to begin a manhunt. He was caught while trying to cross the border to Brazil.

The Justice Ministry stands to file an official extradition motion with its Argentinean counterpart within the next few days.

"We were able to pinpoint his whereabouts by tracking a phone call he made to Israel," Superintendent Itzik Comreal, of the Dan District Police, told Ynet.

"With the assistance of the Buenos Aires Police and Interpol, we were able to physically track him down. We then alerted the Brazilian authorities he may try to cross the border, and indeed, he was arrested when he tried to do so."
