Syrian daily doubts Livni will advance peace

‘Tishrin’ changes its tone, unmercifully painting picture of Kadima chairwoman as peace rejecter, Palestinian-killing agent

After terming newly elected Kadima Chairwoman Tzipi Livni as, "the pretty woman from the Mossad," the official government Syrian daily ”Tishrin” has begun to change its tone.

Issam Dari, the paper’s editor-in-chief on Wednesday expressed his doubts that Livni will take the peace path.

Under the title, “The escape from peace,” he wrote, “Are we supposed to expect good things from a person who came from a family who carried out eliminations and murder and worked in the ‘profession’ of murder?”

“In the past few days there were those who have tried to improve the image of Tzipi Livni, the person chosen for the task of forming the Israeli government, by describing her as, ‘moderate’ and someone who will advance the Syrian and Palestinian peace processes.”

On Saturday, the same paper complimented the chairwoman, calling her, “the pretty woman from the Mossad" and "the first political persona and the leading candidate to join the prime ministerial club.”

Now, the winds have changed and the newspaper has taken on a more forceful approach. “While Livni spoke in this manner before, all facts and signs do not indicate that the expected prime minister will support peace,” the editor wrote.

“The comments made in the Israeli establishment support this, just as Major-General Giora Eiland, former head of the National Security Council said, ‘If Livni makes it to the prime ministerial thrown she won’t defend the peace as others expect of her.’”

'Never denied her past'

Dari continued to say, “During a lecture he gave in Europe, Eiland supplied a list of reasons that caused him to be convinced that Livni won’t, ‘sing outside of the choir’ and won’t divert from the policy chosen by all previous prime ministers; a policy which was always characterized by terror, wars and expansionary aspirations.”

“We didn’t need the Israeli general’s testimony in order to foresee Tzipi Livni’s path and what her policy and plans will be…we can’t forget the garden-bed within which Livni sprouted, in what surroundings she was raised and educated and what her ‘good qualities’ are and the characteristics that caused her to attain this position.”

Reverting to Livni's family history, Dari said, “Her parents were members of the Irgun terrorist gang that carried out attacks and murder before Palestine was robbed.

“She was a member of the Israeli Mossad and conducted or participated in the eliminations of Palestinian leaders in Europe. She never denied her past but rather took pride in it,” he said.

The editor went on to describe his views on Israeli society’s political inclinations saying, “The general tone in Israel is not a message of the desire for peace.

“Israeli society is leaning more and more to the extreme right…So, are we supposed to expect good things after all this? The answer will come to us soon after the formation of the new government - then it will become clear that Israel does not want peace and that everything the Israelis said about peace is nothing more than deception and a presentation of Israel as a peace dove (as opposed to) the Arabs who repel peace,” wrote Dari.
