El Al plane receives false bomb threat

Paris-Tel Aviv flight escorted into Israeli airspace by IAF jets after bomb threat is received in Paris. IDF inspection of plane reveals no bomb on board

An El Al plane arriving in Israel from Paris, France had to be escorted into Israeli airspace by Air Force (IAF) jets after a bomb threat was received for the flight. The Boeing 767 landed safely in Ben-Gurion International Airport.

After the 8 pm landing the plane was inspected by the IDF, which later stated that the bomb threat had been false. It had been received in Paris just a short while after the plane's departure.

In March a Lufthansa flight caused a commotion in Israel's airport after entering the country's territory without proper prior notification. IAF jets were alerted and the plane was brought safely to landing.

Also in March, IAF jets were alerted when an Egyptian helicopter accidentally crossed over Israel's southern border. The jets escorted the craft back into Egypt.

The last known incidents of bombs exploding aboard El Al planes were in 1986. In June, bomb in a suitcase exploded in a plane while it was still on the ground in Madrid, and in April a bomb planted inside a radio blew up during a flight from London but caused only minimal damage.
