Shut up already

Uri Orbach says radical settlers who cursed at security forces threaten settlement enterprise

The harsh curses directed at police and Border Guard officers by some settlers on Sunday are intolerable. They are so intolerable that it would be better that these thugs be handled not by law authorities, but rather, by the kind of authorities that can order forced hospitalization.

I do not suspect that the people who were cursing like that have been planted by the Shin Bet in order to taint the image of all the settlers. To our regret and shame, there are enough people among the settlers who can come up with their own original vulgarities, and do it voluntarily and in their free time.

Those people are mere fools who decided that no evacuation or action against them on the part of security forces would go without a response. And what is the implication of this response? Violence and the damaging of Palestinian property and graves, and a dirty mouth targeting everything that is precious and holy to us.

If this is what they have to say, it would be better if they just shut up.

However, this is not merely a question of manners and politeness. Rather, this also has some practical implications. Every such outburst is a huge gift for the Israeli Left and for all those who hate the settlements. Various organizations, ranging from Yesh Gvul to B’Tselem, should be sending a beautiful bouquet of flowers to the rightist rioters.

These organizations, with their ugly and all too common declarations and articles, take pleasure in not making a distinction between moderate and radical settlers. For these groups, everyone is a radical.

The IDF and police have already been trampled on, swore at, and spat on by anarchists and leftist activists. There is no need for further additions on the part of those who make pretenses of doing it because of their love for the land.

Moreover, we should say the painful truth: These people do not scare the army and police. They also do not scare their political rivals. Rather, they scare the supporters of the settlement enterprise, who know that this is not the way of the Torah and of civilized people.

Indeed, the people of Israel will not accept the message of the land’s redemption if it comes from the mouths of nutcases.
