Arab twins suspected of torching synagogue

15-year-old twins arrested on suspicion of throwing molotov cocktail into synagogue east of Tel Aviv. Attorney: They have alibis

Arab twins from the city of Lod, east of Tel Aviv, were arrested Thursday on suspicion that they had torched a synagogue.

The 15-year-old twins are denying the allegations against them. Their attorney claims they were nowhere near the scene of the crime when the fire occurred.

Wednesday morning, a synagogue official arrived to find that a molotov cocktail had been thrown into the Edat Moshe Ve'Israel synagogue, setting the interior and a number of chairs on fire.

The fire had apparently exhausted itself before destroying the synagogue. Police estimated that the crime was racially motivated, as several weeks earlier unknown persons had written racial remarks on the synagogue.

The twins are scheduled to be brought before the Magistrate's Court in Rishon LeZion Friday for a hearing on the remand of their arrest. Their attorney, Ari Kadri, said both had alibis and expressed hope that the court would release them due to lack of evidence.
