UN mulls buying Israeli defense systems

International body delegation to visit Israel, review drones, airborne electronics, intelligence gathering systems ahead of possible contract with local manufacturers

NEW YORK – The Israeli market has begun showing the first signs of recession, but some Israeli companies might be getting a cash transfusion, courtesy of the UN.

Several months ago, an Israeli delegation approached the United Nations' Acquisitions Department and presented its heads with several new and advances Israeli-made defense systems.

The sales pitch seemed to hit the right note: UN forces stationed around the world have become a primary target for terror attacks, resulting in mass casualties over the past few years.

Subsequently, a United Nations acquisitions mission will be arriving in Israel next week, to look into the possible purchase of drones (mini remote-piloted vehicles), airborne electronics systems and intelligence gathering systems.

"Israel is a leader in the field of advanced technology, and we have the means to use this technology to benefit both the UN and other world nations," said Professor Gabriela Shalev, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations.

"Business opportunities aside, I see national significance in presenting the world with Israel's impressive capabilities in the fields of science and technology," she added.
