Montenegro makes formal application to join EU

Montenegro has formally applied to join the European Union, Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic said on Monday after a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency.
The government of Montenegro, a country of just 650,000 people on the Adriatic Sea, decided on Thursday to officially submit the bid to France, current holder of the EU presidency. (Reuters)
