4,000 new housing units to be built in Umm al-Fahm
Haifa construction commission green-lights new project meant to change status of Arab city's western slopes from agricultural to residential; regulate illegal building in area by allowing for 346 acres-worth of construction
The Haifa Regional Planning and Construction Commission on Wednesday approved 4,000 new housing units to be built in the northern town of Umm al-Fahm.
The plan was the brainchild of the Israel Land Administration (ILA) and the Umm al-Fahm Municipality, and it intends to make use of the city's Arek al-Shabab area, situated on the western slopes of the Umm al-Fahm mountain ridge.
The plan also calls for the reallocation of the area, changing its current status from agricultural land to a residential venue. The change would also allow the City to regulate the illegal construction common in the area.
The new al-Shabab neighborhood is expected to span some 346 acres, 140 of which have been designated as a residential area, and the rest for the construction of public buildings and open public spaces.
The Umm al-Fahm project has been approved as part of the Construction and Housing Ministry's plan to build 22,000 new housing units for the Arab sector across Israel.
