'Waltz with Bashir' nominated for Oscar

Ari Folman's highly praised movie on Lebanon War to compete for Best Foreign Language Film award

The race for the 81st Academy Awards officially began Thursday with the announcement of the nominees for the various categories. "Waltz with Bashir," Ari Folman's widely praised animated film, has been nominated for the category of Best Foreign Language Film.

This year marks the second in a row in which Israeli films have been nominated for the category.

"This is one of the best emotions a person can feel," Folman told Ynet. "This is a true Cinderella story. We had the least amount of intentions and that's probably why the film has gone so far."

He said "Waltz with Bashir'" started out very small, but ended up sweeping people off their feet. "I believe films are karma derived from connections between people, and people with a lot of faith came together for this project," Folman said.

"Waltz with Bashir" is the eighth Israeli film nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, but despite the numerous nominations none has succeeded in grasping the desired statuette.

Folman will compete with the German film "The Baader Meinhof Complex," which was also its competition for the Golden Globe Award, as well as the French film that defeated 'Waltz with Bashir' at Cannes, "Between the Walls." Other nominees include the Japanese "Departures," and the Austrian "Revanche."
