Students to be required to visit Jerusalem
New Education Ministry regulation to introduce mandatory trips to capital in bid to 'strengthen bond between teens and their roots'
Each student in the Israeli education system will be required to visit Jerusalem at least once during his school years, Education Ministry Director-General Dr. Shimshon Shoshani announced this weekend.
The visit will take place as part of school trips and be subsidized by the government.
Shoshani initiated the new regulation after learning that only half of high school graduates in Israel in recent years have been to the capital.

The mandatory trips to Jerusalem will also include visits to the Western Wall, the Supreme Court, the Knesset, Ammunition Hill and the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Shoshani, who is scheduled to take office on Monday after the cabinet formally approves his appointment, coordinated his plan with Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar. The plan is in line with Sa'ar's policy, which seeks to strengthen Jewish, Zionist and democratic values in the education system.
"As part of the education to values it is important to strengthen the bond between the next generation and the capital of the people of Israel and their roots," said Sa'ar.
Shoshani will also meet with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat in order to agree on the municipality's involvement in the initiative.
