Italian Naples mafia clan leader arrested in Spain

None

Raffaele Amato, a clan leader of the Camorra Neapolitan mafia on the run since 2006 has been arrested by Italian and Spanish police in Malaga in Spain, the Naples police said on Sunday.

Some five years ago, Amato led a successful breakaway from the previously dominant Di Lauro clan and took control of the narcotics market in northern Naples and the surrounding area. The Camorra is less powerful than the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta based in Italy's southwestern tip, which now controls much of Europe's drug trafficking and has taken over from the Sicilian mafia as the country's foremost crime syndicate.
