Syrian FM: Hizbullah had nothing to do with hit on Hariri

Walid Mouallem denied latest report in Germany's Der Spiegel which link Shiite group to 2005 assassination of Lebanese PM, says article 'nothing but worthless scribble'

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mouallem denied yet again Berlin's Der Spiegel report suggesting Hizbullah operatives were involved in the 2005 assassination of then-Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

The latest issue of the German magazine reported that the special UN commission investigating the Hariri assassination has concluded that Hizbullah was behind the hit, but preferred not to claim it.

Speaking at a Damascus press conference, Mouallem called the report "lies," adding that the article in question was "noting but worthless scribble printed in a notable publication."

Mouallem called on the German magazine to "investigate the validity of the information, check its sources and find out who is behind them."

Turning his attention to the Israeli-Syrian peace talks, the Syrian foreign minister said that his country will not revisit the negotiations with Israel "unless certain guarantees are given.

"When Syria decides to resume talks it will do that based on the international premise calling for the liberation of the Golan Heights and the return to the1967 borders."
