80% of enlisted hesder yeshiva students join combat units

Over 500 yeshiva students arrived Tuesday at Tel Hashomer recruitment base to begin their military service. Large majority to serve in Infantry, Armored Corps and Field Intelligence units

Over 500 youths studying in hesder yeshivot as part of a program which combines advanced Talmudic studies with military service, joined the army on Tuesday. Among the August 2009 class of yeshiva recruits, over 80% will serve in combat units. The rest of the recruits will spend their service in Home Front units according to their medical profile.

The hundreds of yeshiva students arrived together to the recruitment base at Tel Hashomer, accompanied by many family members and rabbis from their yeshivas. The students celebrated their enlistment by singing and dancing and expressed their happiness with the privilege given to them to serve their country. After parting with their families the new recruits began the enlistment process.

The youths are joining IDF's field units including the paratroopers, Golani, Givati, Nahal (Pioneering Fighting Youth-in army) and Kfir. Apparently an increase in yeshiva boys' demand for the Armored Corps was noted following Operation Cast Lead.

The students also enlisted in the Field Intelligence Unit following a year in which no hesder yeshiva students were recruited to the unit due to various problems. After problems were solved to the satisfaction of the Hesder Yeshivas Union head, recruitment resumed.

An additional class of hesder yeshiva students will be opened in the Navy in the next recruitment cycle, following the success and satisfaction of previous classes' commanders with the students. The Hesder Yeshivas Union, together with the Navy is exploring the possibility of the students also being able to apply to commanders' and officers' posts within the Corps.

Hesder Yeshivas Union Head Eitan Ozeri stated during enlistment, "Hesder yeshiva students show high motivation and are fighting for every vacancy in IDF's field units. The union is happy with the Navy's decision to continue enlisting yeshiva students."
