Policeman injured in outpost clashes

Security forces arrive at Havat Gilad to confiscate truck moving a caravan. Policeman lightly hurt in clashes with settlers; three people detained for questioning

A policeman was lightly injured Sunday afternoon in clashes at the Havat Gilad outpost in the West Bank. He was evacuated to the Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba for medical treatment.

Three settlers were detained for questioning during the clashes on suspicion of assaulting police officers. The outpost residents claimed that the police had violently attacked the settlers, some of them not wearing their badges.

The security forces arrived at the outpost after a caravan inside the compound was moved. The forces sought to confiscate the truck which had moved the caravan.

Earlier Sunday, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Gabi Ashkenazi took part in a ceremony in honor of the Jewish New Year together with West Bank settlement leaders.

"It is obvious that you're operating in a complex reality and that you (often) find yourselves between a rock and a hard place. We, in this sector, will lend you whatever support we can," Ashkenazi told the settler leaders.

Central Command Chief Major-General Shamni told the gathering that the previous year "was a positive one, security-wise. Both the Israeli and the Palestinian residents of the area saw an improvement in freedom of movement and the safety of the routes.

"We are still facing complex challenges and we don’t know how things are going to shape out," he continued. "The IDF is geared for any possibility and together we can face all the challenges ahead."
