Zikney Tzfat cancels reunion gig

Nineties rock band was slated to hold reunion concert as opening act for American grunge pioneer Mudhoney

Zikney Tzfat ("Elders of Safed"), one of Israel's leading rock bands of the 1990s, has canceled its reunion concert on October 26 at Tel Aviv's Barby club. The group was supposed to open for Seattle grunge pioneers Mudhoney as part of the Tel Aviv music festival.

Maor Cohen, Oren Lutenberg and brothers Tom and Rea Mochiah were slated to perform their old classic songs.

The band's last album was released in 1996, after which its members went their separate ways. The rockers still found time to collaborate together on various projects. Cohen, for example, teamed up with Lutenberg on several occasions, including in their 1980s-inspired group Habalyanim (the "Hedonists"). The band has yet to announce any additional concerts.

As part of their visit in Israel, Mudhoney will also take part in a Storytellers series event, in which artists will also take questions from the audience. The event will take place on October 27 at the Ozen Bar in the Third Ear music compound in Tel Aviv.

The evening is scheduled to include performances from such Israeli bands as Wet Bandits, David Blau and The Good Band and more.

The Third Ear's cinema theater will also screen grunge era films from the nineties such as 'Singles' and the documentary 'Hype!', which captured the grunge phenomenon, as well as unplugged performances of Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam.
