Memorial service held for Asaf Ramon
'It's been a month now, and I still can't believe all this has happened,' mother of killed pilot says during ceremony marking 30 days since fatal crash. Squadron commander: We had to move on
A memorial service was held for Captain Asaf Ramon at the cemetery in Nahalal on Tuesday, a month after the F-16A Falcon jet he was piloting crashed during a routine training flight near the southern Hebron Hills.
Ramon, 21, is the son of Col. Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut, who died during the Columbia space shuttle disaster in 2003. Ilan Ramon was also an F-16 pilot. Asaf was buried beside his father.
"It's been a month now, and I still can't believe all this has happened; I believe with all my heart that your father is there for you – comforting, embracing, listening to every word you say, every story you tell – just like you always wanted," Asaf's mother Rona said during the ceremony.
Lieutenant-Colonel Or, Asaf's squadron commander, said, "After your comrades accompanied you on your final journey, they resumed their training. It wasn't easy, but we knew we had to move on."
Next to speak was Asa's girlfriend, Adi, who said, "My Asafi, I ask that you protect us and give us the infinite strength and love that you possessed."
