Ushrenko killer: I'm a f***ing nasty murderer

Ynet presents disturbing account of killer's interrogation; Ushrenko massacre suspect Damian Kerlik bragged about butchering family members 'one by one,' told investigators 'why are you making such big deal over murder of children?'

Police investigators tasked with solving the Ushrenko massacre case told Ynet Monday about the deeply disturbing moments they faced during the probe.

The top police officers involved in the case said they had an especially tough time while dealing with highly troubling statements by Damian Kerlik, .the suspected killer of the Ushrenko grandparents, parents, and children.

Chief Inspector Elidov Hecht told Ynet that Kerlik initially insisted that he was not involved in the shocking murder. "He kept on repeating the words 'I told you my version' over and over again," Hecht said.

Wife confesses

However, on Tuesday of last week, the big day police were waiting for finally arrived. A day earlier, Kerlik's wife confessed to her role in the crime, giving investigators more information to work with.

"I adopted a different tactic with him," Hecht said. "I told him this murder will always be talked about; the best criminologists will lecture about it in university and the best researchers will study it. He is such an egocentric person, and it started to open him up."

Entire family wiped out

At one point, police attempted to appeal to Kerlik's emotional side, but quickly realized this was the wrong tactic. At first they brought his mother into a nearby room and arranged for him to see her crying. Later they "happened to" transfer his father through a nearby corridor, prompting him to tell his son: "Look at what's happening to the family. Mom is sick. Look at what's happening to us. "

However, Kerlik maintained his silence.

Murder scene

By that evening, investigators presented the murder suspect with their findings, including DNA evidence. Kerlik eventually asked Hecht to step outside, citing his concern that his words will be recorded. At that point he turned to the police officer and uttered the confession police were waiting for: "I'm a f***ing nasty murderer."

'It was shocking'

Hecht recounted his first candid conversation with Kerlik: "He looked me in the eye and said:' I butchered all of them, one by one'. He talked for 20 minutes about his feelings of despise and hate toward the family."

"I saw the face of evil in front of me. He continued to brag about how he murdered the grandmother, mother, son and the children. It was shocking," the police officer said. "He described each and every detail, including the last words of each of the victims."

Hecht convinced Kerlik to go into the investigation room and complete his testimony. When asked about the murder of the children, Kerlik replied: "Why are you making a big deal about the murder of the children."?

Despite his words, Kerlik later admitted he felt regret for the children's death during the funeral. From that point, it didn't take long before he proceeded with the crime's reenactment.

"I was shocked. It was difficult. The first thing I did was to call my wife. I wanted to hear her voice. A sane voice after an hour-and-a-half conversation with a man who is the epitomy of evil in this world," said Hecht
