Canadian volunteer: Man raped me at club

Haifa resident detained after Canadian woman identifies him as man who recently raped her

A 24-year-old Haifa resident was detained early Saturday in a northern Israel club, after a 20-year-old volunteer from Canada identified him as the man who raped her about a month and a half ago.

The man was surprised to be approached by police at the club but did not resist arrest.

The foreign volunteer, who was at the club with her friends, called the Afula police station at night and reported that a man at the venue raped her recently. Police officers rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect.

The Canadian woman provided details of the incident Saturday morning, telling police that she met the rape suspect about a month and a half ago at the same club. The woman said she accompanied the man to the parking lot at the end of the night, and he then raped her at the site.

The suspect denies that he knows the woman and his version of the story is being looked into at this time.

However, the suspect's attorneys characterized the Canadian woman's charges as a "miserable case of mistaken identity."

"The complainant went 'hunting' last night at the club, pointed to five different people and claimed that they raped her, and eventually decided to focus on our client," one lawyer said. "To our regret it shows the unbearable ease of detainment in the State of Israel, where every complainant can utter words that prompt the detainment of an innocent person."
