Kadima's No. 2 tells Livni she cannot hold negotiations alone

Kadima Chairwoman Tzipi Livni meets senior party members, discusses PM's offer to join government. MK Shaul Mofaz tells Livni she cannot enter negotiations alone; must form coalitional negotiation team with Likud members

Kadima Chairwoman Tzipi Livni spoke Saturday with the party's number two, MK Shaul Mofaz, about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's suggestion to bring Kadima into a unity government.

Mofaz told Livni that she cannot hold negotiations by herself, and that a coalitional negotiation team must be formed with the Likud. Sources close to Livni said that Netanyahu's offer seemed "not serious."

A source close to Livni said: "only under very particular circumstances I would go for it – join for a limited time, and bring about a change to the governmental system. That's the only relevant subject."

Livni also spoke with other Kadima Knesset members, with whom she discussed the party's crisis as well as their stands vis-à-vis the negotiations with Netanyahu.

As of now, most senior Kadima members assert that the PM's offer is "not serious, and therefore there is no reason to join the government."

Meanwhile, a meeting that was slated to take place Saturday evening between Livni and her closest advisors ahead of her meeting Sunday with Netanyahu was reportedly canceled.

Earlier on Saturday, MK Israeli Hasson said that he will support joining the government, if the latter will advance laws to change the governmental system and promote national service for all.

"A number of people turned to me and it is very flattering, but I rejected their offers politely, "said Hasson, adding that "people at Kadima need to adjust to the position within the opposition, and that is not easy for them."

Hasson said he does not think Kadima is facing a division, "this assessment has no grasp in reality, in my opinion, because such a division, if at all possible, will only be as a result of power struggle, distribution of portfolios and the coalition's will to survive, not out of ideological arguments such as those prevalent during the disengagement."
