Maya Maron wins best actress at FIPA festival
Israeli actress awarded for her role in TV adaptation of Alona Kimhi's best-selling novel 'Weeping Susannah'; Amikam Goldman wins special prize for documentary on migrant workers in Israel
Israeli actress Maya Maron won the Best Actress award at the 23rd International Festival of Audiovisual Programs in Biarritz, France (Jan. 26-31) for her leading role in the television series "Weeping Susannah".
The series, an adaptation of Alona Kimhi's best-selling novel, was directed by Lina and Slava Chaplin. Kimhi wrote the script.
Maron plays Susannah, a mentally disturbed amateur painter in her late 20s who lives in Israel with her widowed mother. The arrival of a long-lost nephew from New York, who asks to stay with the two women, turns Susannah's world upside down.
"Directors Lina and Slava Chaplin called me Saturday night from the festival to tell me that I had won," Maron said, "I would have loved to have been there myself. This is my first acting award. I've never won any award for playing in a movie or television series."
Another Israeli, Amikam Goldman, was awarded a special prize in the Reportage and Current Affairs category for his directorial work in the documentary Long Distance, which follows the lives of migrant workers in Israel.
The festival, which wrapped up on Sunday, is considered one of the most prestigious of its kind in Europe.
