Klezmer musical coming to Toronto

'Soul of Gershwin', featuring 23 songs from acclaimed composer George Gershwin played by Jewish folk music band, to be staged at in Canadian city in May

"The Soul of Gershwin" features 23 songs from acclaimed composer George Gershwin, played by a klezmer band, including vocalists. Some of Gerswins’s classics include "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Summertime" and "'S Wonderful."

While the real Gershwin died at the young age of 38 from a brain tumor, the play features an actor who plays Gershwin as he reflects on his career.

The American composer was influenced by European classical music, as well as blues and jazz played at New York nightclubs.

Gershwin first found work at a publishing firm in New York City's Tin Pan Ally, penning songs like "When You Want 'Em You Can't Get 'Em, When You've Got 'Em, You Don't Want 'Em." While in his 20’s, he composed "Rhapsody in Blue," which to this day continues to be played and recorded by dozens of artists. He also developed a presence on Broadway in the 1920’s and ‘30s with his brother, Ira Gershwin, composing classics like Show Girl and Funny Face.

Aside from a play, Gershwin’s story might be transformed into a Hollywood production as well. Steven Speilberg is reportedly involved in the biopic, which could feature Star Trek’s Zachary Quinto as Gershwin, according to MTV News.

"The Soul of Gershwin" will be staged at the the Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto, from May 1 to May 9. For more information, visit www.hgjewishtheatre.com.
