Berlin Holocaust memorial suffering from cracks

Officials say there no solution to damaged concrete slabs at five-year-old award winning Jewish memorial

Officials at Berlin's Holocaust memorial say most of its 2,711 concrete slabs are suffering from cracks only five years after it opened.

Memorial foundation director Uwe Neumaerker said Wednesday experts have found no remedy yet for the damage in at least two-thirds of the slabs.

Neumaerker said there is no danger to visitors and he doesn't believe the damage is beyond repair.

German daily Bild reported that, following a hard winter, at least 2,200 slabs in the memorial near Berlin's Brandenburg Gate are damaged.

Neumaerker said that number was "speculation" and he hasn't yet sent out experts for a detailed check on the slabs.

He said the memorial has drawn at least 2.2 million visitors since 2005.
