Egyptian court convicts 26 men of links to Hezbollah

Men, including Lebanese, Palestinians, Egyptians, and one Sudanese, get prison terms ranging from six months to 25 years

An Egyptian court on Wednesday convicted 26 men of planning attacks inside Egypt and of being linked to Lebanese group Hezbollah.

The prosecution requested the Hezbollah agents receive the death penalty, but the judge settled for prison terms.

Judge Adel Abdel Salam Gomaa of the emergency state security court sentenced the men - who included Lebanese, Palestinians, Egyptians and one Sudanese - to prison terms ranging from six months to 25 years.

The judge accused the cell of "attempting to harm Egypt's economy and spread chaos."

Four of the convicted men received life sentences. Sami Shihab, one of the cell's heads, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The prosecution demanded the terrorists receive the death penalty, claiming they should "receive the maximum punishment according to the law".
