Police: 'Jewish terrorist' had help

Shin Bet, police tell court they believe Haim Pearlman had accomplices in murders of four Palestinians, but attorney denies allegations. 'If there is any evidence against him, now is time to file indictment,' he says

The Shin Bet and police believe Haim Pearlman, dubbed the "Jewish terrorist" had accomplices in the murders of four Palestinians, a police representative told the Petah Tikvah Magistrates' Court Wednesday during a hearing on the remand of his arrest.

Police sources refused to go into further detail, but confirmed the report. Pearlman's arrest was remanded until Monday.

In addition to the four murders, which took place in Jerusalem, Pearlman is also suspected of seven attempted murders. Three other men have been arrested and released in relation to the charges.

"Other people, aside from Pearlman, are suspected of the murders and attempted murders," the police spokesman said.

Pearlman was arrested on July 13, so police will have to receive special permission from the attorney general in order to hold him past the 30-day limit. But the judges hearing his case have so far agreed to remand his arrest, citing well-founded suspicions and complications in investigating the murders, which occurred in the 90's.

Pearlman's attorney, Aharon Rosa, disagrees. "This lengthy detainment period has given us the feeling that the investigation has not produced significant proof of the central charges. There is no evidence tying Pearlman to these crimes. If there is enough proof, this would be the time to file an indictment," he said.

Karen Pearlman, Haim's wife, was also present at the hearing. She sat whispering to her husband until the judge ordered her to move to the other side of the courtroom. But while the judge was out Keren called to her husband, "Don't believe them. There is only one judge, and He is in the sky."

This week a fourth suspect was detained for questioning. The man, a 30-year old friend of Pearlman's, is a settler who resides near Ramallah. He was released immediately after his interrogation.
