'Sex' and 'pizza' hottest names in cellular dialing

Web surfers storm new Israeli cellular name dialing registry website. Technology enables dialing name instead of phone number

Some 30,000 people entered the Israeli Call Name Registry website on its first day and 6,300 requests were registered, Calcalist learned Sunday.

According to NTTM, the company which developed the technology, the names Israelis were most interested were, unsurprisingly, "sex," "insurance" and "pizza," in that order. Other popular names were "lawyer," "taxi," "vacation," "flowers," "mortgage" and "tow truck."

NTTM recently announced they had signed an agreement with Cellcom according to which the cellular provider will be authorized to use the new technology for dialing names from any cellular phone, instead of dialing numbers.

The technology that NTTM spent three years developing provides a solution for dialing names from any phone in GSM networks using technology assimilated on the SIM card.

Once the technology is assimilated, the SIM card can accept letters that have been dialed and send them to the network as if they were dial number destinations. This will enable any individual or business to choose a significant name, combining letters, digits and symbols in different languages, with no limitations on the length, to be used instead of a phone number.

The requests for name registration are submitted at the Israeli Call Name Registry (www.icnr.org.il), and priority is given to those who wish to list a trademark registered in Israel.

The early registration is held according to principles practiced in the field of internet domains, and is designed to guarantee impartiality and transparency, allow for protection of rights, give precedence to owners of registered trademarks and have arbitration procedures among applicants regarding any disputes that might arise in the process of name registration.
