Jerusalem offers late-summer events

Capital features an exhilarating lineup of street fairs, concerts and exhibitions for travelers arriving in Israel throughout year

With its ancient holy sites, world-class museums and burgeoning culinary scene, Jerusalem is no stranger to excitement and activity. And in the spirit of summer, Jerusalem features an exhilarating lineup of street fairs, concerts and exhibitions for travelers arriving in Israel throughout the year.

The new Alrov Mamilla Avenue has been transformed into a live street fair and features a selection of jugglers, acrobats and street artists, as well as arts and crafts fairs and musical concerts every Thursday evening from 6:30 pm-11 pm throughout August.

The Fair Tale Sculpture exhibition and Israeli Folk dancing workshop take place every Monday evening at 7:30 pm.

The Tower of David Museum, located in the restored ancient citadel adjacent to the Jaffa Gate, stays open late throughout August and showcases several music and art festivals, including the "Funk & Roll Festival 2010" with live concerts, street theater performances and food stalls, August 20 and 22.

Also, the Museum's Night Spectacular features a unique audio-visual display of historical images of Jerusalem projected onto the walls, bridges, archaeological ruins and hidden pathways of the Citadel, Monday-Thursday and Saturday beginning at 8 pm throughout August.

The newly renovated Israel Museum will offer a diverse selection of exhibits and installations through 2010, including:

  • A Rare Gift (through October 2, 2010): The Noel and Harriette Levine Collection of Photographs, spanning over 170 years, will be displayed to the public for the first time since it was gifted to the Museum in 2008. The exhibit includes works ranging from 19th-century British collotypes to modernist masterpieces and contemporary works, including images by Man Ray, André Kertész, David Octavius Hill, Paul Outerbridge and August Sander.

  • Artists' Choices (through January 2011): Curated by contemporary artists Zvi Goldstein, Susan Hiller and Yinka Shonibare, the exhibition will feature a wide array of mixed-media art, prehistoric sculptures, paintings, artifacts and poems.

  • Still/Moving (through April 2011): Exploring the use of meditative movement and space perception in a variety of media, the installation will include video and photography works by artists Carlos Amorales, Olafur Eliasson, Ori Gersht, Mona Hatoum, Junya Ishigami and Bill Viola.
