Egyptian security forces on Sunday discovered five weapons and explosives caches set to be smuggled into the Gaza Strip via tunnels, according to a report published in the independent Palestinian news agency Maan on Sunday.
Egyptian sources said a cache holding 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of TNT explosives was discovered in El-Arish, near the border with Gaza. Automatic rifles and ammunition were uncovered in a depot in the border town of Rafah, and in central Sinai, three caches containing 170 anti-aircraft missiles and 50 anti-aircraft bullets were found, according to Maan.
The news agency quoted Egyptian security officials as saying smugglers could extract large amounts of TNT from anti-aircraft missiles. They said the weapons were to be smuggled into Gaza through the tunnel network.
The sources added that three men accused of smuggling weapons into Gaza were detained in Sheikh Zuwayid, a city near Gaza's southern border.
Egypt announced on Saturday that it located weapons caches containing 190 anti-aircraft missiles and various weaponry. It was also reported that Egypt destroyed 12 smuggling tunnels.
