The Dutch government has issued a European arrest warrant for a Nazi collaborator convicted of war crimes in the Netherlands in 1947 and now living in freedom in Germany
The 88-year-old Klaas Carel Faber was convicted of murder and treason for helping the Netherlands' Nazi occupiers during World War II and sentenced to life in prison. He escaped and claimed citizenship in Germany in 1952.
Germany for decades declined to extradite him and their own attempts to prosecute Faber have failed, most recently in August.
Dutch public prosecutors said Thursday they are now trying for the first time to use the European arrest warrant system, adopted in 2002 in response to terrorist threats, in Faber's case, a first step in having him extradited.
