B'tselem hands Naalin shooting tape to police

Video of 2008 incident will undergo forensic testing after legal team disputes its authenticity

The B'tselem organization handed over a tape in which an IDF soldier is seen shooting at the foot of a bound Palestinian protestor in Naalin, two and a half years after it was recorded.

The police are expected to give the tape, which shows Staff Sgt. Leonardo Corea firing at the order of Lt. Colonel Omri Burberg, to forensics for an objective investigation.

An expert opinion handed to the military court hearing the soldiers' case said the tape was fraudulent, and that parts of it had been planted. The defense accused B'tselem of forgery. But the left-wing organization says it has no part in the process, and that it had done its job by making the case public.

B'tselem spokeswoman Sarit Michaeli says many accusations have been flung at the organization recently regarding the footage it has publicized. "That is why we asked for an appeal to the family of the camerawoman from Naalin, so that she can hand over the original tape for a forensics test," she said.

Four months ago the military court convicted Burberg, formerly the commander of the Armored Corps' 71st Battalion, of threats and Corea of unlawful use of a weapon. They were both also convicted of conduct unbecoming.

The convictions carry criminal records, and the maximum penalty is three years in prison. Sentencing hearings are still ongoing.
