Families of Carmel fire victims demand inquiry committee

Several family members of cadets who died on their way to evacuate Damon Prison last month protest outside site hosting Prison Service officers' course graduation ceremony. 'What is Bibi afraid of? I owe my children some answers' says widow of Yaron Barami

On the day they were meant to attend their children's course graduation ceremony, several family members of the Carmel fire disaster victims held a protest outside the Prison Service officers school in Ramle. The families are protesting the decision not to set up an inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances that led to the disaster.

"We were meant to be here with our sons and daughters who were supposed to graduate," one protestor said. "We demand a state commission of inquiry."

Among the protestors was Einav Barami, who lost her husband Yaron. "I don't understand what Bibi is afraid of. Bibi, tell me what you're afraid of? I owe my children answers, I have nothing against Eli Yishai."

She also addressed the memorial ceremony in Beit Oren during which the interior minister was forced to leave the hall. "He's to blame like many others. He's not the only one who should have stepped out. The first two rows should have stepped out."

Only 14 cadets out of the 49 will graduate Thursday after 35 of their friends died when their bus caught fire on the way to Damon Prison.

Among the graduates are two cadets and a female officer who were on the bus and survived the disaster alongside other cadets who fortunately did not board the bus.
