Madhat Yusuf's relatives consider petitioning against Gantz

Gantz, who has been named as Defense Minister Ehud Barak's choice as the next IDF chief of staff, was commander of the Judea and Samaria Division at the time. It was claimed he did not exhaust all options to save Yusuf, who was badly injured in clashes in the Joseph's Tomb compound, despite the fact that there was a force ready to enter and rescue the soldier.
Madhat's brother Mehdi told Ynet that the family opposes Gantz's appointment. "Gantz didn’t do anything during and after the event despite the fact he was 600 meters away from Madhat," he said.
He blamed Defense Minister Ehud Barak for the appointment.
"Gantz cannot protect the soldiers and in fact poses a danger to their lives, for lack of responsibility and professionalism," he claimed.
Mehdi added that the family members are considering taking the matter to the High Court of Justice. "Whoever assumes this role must be a responsible and honest person who can overcome anything and not run like Gantz did."
The soldier's family has already approached the High Court of Justice in the past and demanded that a state commission of inquiry be created to investigate the event. The court rejected the petition. Judge Turkel ruled at the time that the IDF's "comprehensive inquiry" had fulfilled the need to investigate the incident and supported the prime minister's decision not to order a commission of inquiry on top of that.
