During the "High Shabbat" sermon (the Shabbat before Passover) at Jerusalem's Yeshurun Synagogue, Metzger said Obama could prove his commitment to Israel by releasing Pollard.
"Before forcing political moves on us, Obama must prove the mutual commitment and friendship he has declared," the rabbi stated.
Rabbi Metzger added that "if President Obama seeks a second term, he must release Pollard immediately."
He said this was not a prediction, but a feeling stemming from the fact that many Jews who supported Obama are disappointed by his indifference in light of the many appeals made for Pollard's release, including by former American leaders who admit there is no justification to keep him in jail.
About half a year ago, Metzger met in his office with Pollard's wife, Esther, as part of her efforts to get key Israeli figures to support the struggle for her husband's release. The rabbi called on the public to "flood the White House with letters", demanding that the American administration release Pollard immediately.
The chief rabbi heard about Pollard's difficult medical condition in prison, and urged the public to pray for his health. His office workers, who were present at the meeting, said that the rabbi broke into tears while talking to Pollard's wife.
