Holocaust survivors and Polish officials have laid wreaths in ceremonies marking 68 years since Jewish insurgents in the Warsaw Ghetto began an armed resistance against the Nazis.

Flowers were laid Tuesday at the monument to Ghetto fighters and at a monument at the point where in 1942 and 1943 Jews gathered for deportation on trains bound for the Treblinka death camp.

The uprising was the first act of large-scale armed civilian resistance against the Germans in occupied Poland during World War II.

The resistance of young and poorly armed Jews was a doomed struggle, yet some managed to survive and today the act of resistance stands as a source of pride for many Jews.
