Israel to host youth Physics Olympiad

TAU's School of Physics and Astronomy selected to to hold annual physics competition for high school students from Asia, Oceania regions. Event to include 134 participants from 18 countries

It may not be the World Cup or the Winter Olympics, but Israel is slated to host the annual Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) – a prestigious international physics competition for high school students from Asia and thw Oceania regions.

 

The Olympiad, which will open on May 1, will host 18 delegations and a total of some 134 participants. Some of the participating countries, including Indonesia and Cambodia, do not have formal diplomatic ties with Israel.

 

Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar welcomed Israel's opportunity to host the event and said "hosting the Olympiad is an important component of the broader campaign to promote sciences and technology."

 

The Education Ministry, which is hosting the event on behalf of the State of Israel, stated that the eight students which will represent Israel in the competition were selected following a long process of screening, which included 3,000 candidates.

 

The School of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University will organize the event after winning a tender issued by the ministry.
