Cookbook honors Holocaust survivors

'Recipes Remembered: A Celebration of Survival' includes more than 80 stories from Shoah survivors and their families, as well as 170 kosher recipes. Book also contains archival photographs, artifacts from Museum of Jewish Heritage in NYC

Working in conjunction with the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City, author June Feiss Hersh has created "Recipes Remembered: A Celebration of Survival".

Not merely a compilation of recipes, rather "Recipes Remembered" is a collection of more than 80 stories from Holocaust survivors and their families, including 170 kosher recipes. It also contains archival photographs and artifacts from the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

“While at its heart this is a book of recipes, in its soul it is a book of stories; life-affirming and uplifting stories about a community of remarkable people who have nourished and nurtured their families for decades,” Hersh explains in her introduction.

“A book like this, that helps we Jews hand down this central aspect of our culture, the food that has nourished us through the ages, makes an important contribution to the ongoing struggle to keep the Jewish faith alive.

"I am proud to be a part of it, especially because of the connection with the Museum of Jewish Heritage, on whose board I so proudly serve,” stated contributor Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the famous sex therapist.

Comprehensively divided into geographical regions, "Recipes Remembered: A Celebration of Survival" contains recipes from Poland, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, and Greece.

Hersh personally tested each of the recipes to provide precise cooking instructions and exact measurements. For good measure, she even provides a glossary of Yiddish words.

"Recipes Remembered: A Celebration of Survival" is available from May 1st, with all proceeds benefiting the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust.
