Syria-backed terror cell exposed in Jenin

West Bank-based cell comprised of 10 Islamic Jihad operatives. Defense establishment sources say they were planning multiple attacks on military, civilian targets in Israel

Cleared for publication: A terror cell comprised of 10 Islamic Jihad operatives was exposed recently in a joint IDF-Shin Bet operation.

 

Defense establishment sources said that the investigation revealed that the cell, which was based in the West Bank city of Jenin, was part of the regional Islamic Jihad headquarters, and received financial backing from Syria, meant to acquire weapons.

The cell's members were also in contact with the Islamic Jihad base in Gaza Strip and with an offshoot of the organization, which provides financial support for the families of terror operatives incarcerated in Israel.

 

According to available details, the cell was planning several terror attacks of military and civilian targets in Israel, including abductions.

 

They were also involved in several shooting incidents at West Bank settlements and rioting, as well as manufacturing munitions and explosives.

 

The 10 were indicted at the Salem Military Court on multiple counts of affiliation with a terror group, utilizing enemy funds and weapons charges.
