Ben Haim's stint at Portsmouth comes to an end

Soccer club reaches agreement with Israeli defender in move meant to save team from liquidation

Israeli player Tal Ben Haim has left the Portsmouth soccer team in a move that concludes three weeks of negotiations over wages.

The Portsmouth Football Club, also known as Pompey, has been plagued with financial difficulties, and the Daily Mail postulated that Ben Haim's departure could save the club from liquidation. The Israeli defender joined the team after leaving Manchester City in 2009.

The player, who earned £36,000 a week plus £1m-a-year image rights, was locked in talks with administrator Trevor Birch for a number of days before Thursday's compromise was reached, according to the British newspaper's website.

Birch previously said that the club would have to close unless all the senior players left.

The next step in the 30-year-old player's career is as yet unclear. He is said to have been invited to play for Maccabi Tel Aviv, but is expected to look into the possibility of staying in Europe.
