The fire broke out in a fuse box in the stairwell after which the smoke spread through the halls and the apartments, trapping the residents - who were sleeping - in their apartments.

Massive fire fighting forces and police arrived at the scene and rescued some of the trapped residents; they then managed to take control of the fire.
Seven intensive care ambulances and Magen David Adom ambulances arrived at the scene and provided medical care for the 19 injured, including two who sustained serious injuries, six moderate and 11 who were lightly wounded.
The injured were evacuated to the Assaf HaRofeh hospital, Kaplan hospital and Tel HaShomer Medical Center.
Magen David Adom Ayalon Region Deputy Commander Efi Bar said that "this is a difficult scene. We received reports of a number of trapped (residents). Most of the wounded were suffering from smoke inhalation as is usual in this situation, except for the woman who jumped who was suffering from fractures and internal injuries. Sadly, she died at the hospital."
"We called in the Electric Company and Gas companies in order to fix the damages created (by the fire)."
