IDF sells NIS 7 million worth of used ammunition

Defense Ministry offers unique bid to sell out-of-use ammunition for metal recycling; planes, tanks, ships to be sold as well

The Defense Ministry will publish in coming days a unique tender selling used and old armory for metal recycling.

According to the planned outline, the IDF is planning to sell between 660 and 800 tons of ammunition, which is expected to result in nearly NIS 7,000,000 ($1,800,000) in income.

According to the Defense Ministry, the IDF holds hundreds of tons of unusable ammunition from small arms and smaller cannon shells in diameter of between 0.22 to 40 millimeter. The new Defense Ministry Director-General Major-General (res.) Dan Harel, who assumed his role earlier this month, decided to sell the used armory to a recycling agent as it is out of use and taking up unnecessary space in IDF bunkers.

The Defense Ministry also stated that these ammunition reserves may cause environmental damage and become a safety hazard. The unit to sell IDF equipment in the security export wing will lead the move. The unit specializes in selling oils, iron, aluminum and computers that were in IDF use for recycling purposes.

The contractor who wins the bid will be able to extract the gun powder from the bullets and use it for controlled explosion testing. The shells and bullets will be able to be melted down and recycled as metal.

Sources in the Defense Ministry said that the unit has sold in the last 18 months over NIS 50,000,000($125,000,000) worth of equipment to various companies, and that all of the sold equipment is no longer needed by the IDF; sources also said the equipment often pollutes the environment and is a safety hazard in IDF bases.

This unique project is only the starting shot to increased selling of older IDF equipment, including tanks, cannons, planes, helicopters, and old air defense systems that IDF is removing as part of the "teuza" project, the IDF's five year plan.

The plan includes closure of many units in the air, sea and land. If these will not be sold as access ammunition to foreign armies, especially ones in South America, Africa and Asia, they will be offered for sale as iron after they have been melted down.
