'Fiddler on the Roof' returning to Broadway
Revival of Tony Award-winning musical about Jewish milkman Teyve, based on stories by Sholom Aleichem, to be presented in fall of 2015.
Producers Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel say they will present a revival of "Fiddler on the Roof" – one of the last great musicals of Broadway's Golden Age – in the fall of 2015.
It will represent the fifth revival of the show, which features lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, music by Jerry Bock and a story by Joseph Stein. There was no word on casting, although Bartlett Sher will direct and choreography will be by Hofesh Shechter, adapting Jerome Robbins' original work.
The Tony Award-winning musical about a Jewish milkman from the Ukrainian village of Anatevka is based on stories by Sholom Aleichem. It centers on Tevye, a poor Orthodox Jew with five rebellious daughters.
The original production in 1964 starred Zero Mostel and had an almost eight-year run, offering the world such stunning songs as "Sunrise, Sunset," ''If I Were a Rich Man" and "Matchmaker, Matchmaker."
Others who have played Teyve include Topol, Herschel Bernardi Jan Peerce. Alfred Molina and Harvey Fierstein played the part in the last Broadway revival in 2004, which ran for two years.
Sher just directed "The Bridges of Madison County" and his recent Broadway credits include "Golden Boy" and "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown." He won a Tony for "South Pacific" in 2008.
