'"Bread steak,' yours for just 30 shekels

Tel Aviv restaurant charges NIS 39 for 'bread steak'

Zakaim in downtown Tel Aviv launches new dish comprising slices of bread on bed of aioli with Romaine lettuce leaves. Owners respond to social media furore: We wanted to put a new spin on Caesar salad.

The vegan lifestyle has gained momentum over the last few years. More and more consumers are choosing to avoid meat, dairy, eggs and other foods and, as a result, many restaurants have decided to cater to this growing community by including vegan options on their menus.

But choices still remain limited, leading to restaurants taking advantage and charging exorbitant prices for vegan dishes.

One recent case, which last week prompted vigorous discussion on Facebook, is the 39-shekel "bread steak" on offer at Zakaim, a vegan restaurant in Tel Aviv. The dish includes slices of bread on a bed of aioli and Romaine lettuce leaves.

Zakaim posted details of its new special dish on its Facebook page, which provoked a storm of furious responses from users.

"Does it matter which part of the loaf the bread comes from?" asked one commenter.

"Can I have my steak rare? I really feel like a lump of dough," quipped another.

Another Facebook user satirically posted a picture of pitta on a gas ring, naming it "pitta on gas."

Ynet spoke with Hila Zakaim, one of the owners of the restaurant, in order to try and understand why the dish is so expensive.

"If I were to cut the bread and salad into little pieces, mix in the aioli and call it a Caesar salad, no one would call it over-the-top," she said.

"The food at Zakaim is simple and I always try to provide a different experience for the customer," she continued. "We wanted to put a fresh spin on a Caesar salad. It's a special dish that isn't part of our regular menu."
