IDF Spokesman Moti Almoz appointed head of Manpower Directorate
Brig. Gen. Almoz will be replacing Maj. Gen. Hagai Topolanski who stepped down and retired from the IDF after a military laptop was stolen from his home; Almoz is the first officer from the Engineering Corps to be promoted to major general.
Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman approved IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot's decision on Thursday to appoint IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Moti Almoz as the new head of the Manpower Directorate.
Almoz, who will be promoted to the rank of major general, will replace Maj. Gen. Hagai Topolanski, who stepped down and retired from the IDF after a military laptop was stolen from his home, raising concerns classified information might have been compromised.
The 49-year-old Almoz will become the first engineering officer to be promoted to the rank of major general. He is married, a father of five, and lives in Kfar Tavor in the Lower Galilee. Two of his daughters currently serve in the IDF—one as an officer in the Medical Corps and the other as an infantry instructor.
Almoz enlisted in the IDF in 1985 and rose through the ranks of the Engineering Corps—from a soldier to a battalion commander. In 2002, he was appointed the engineering officer of the Southern Command and two years later was appointed the commander of the Jordan Valley Brigade.
In 2006-2007, Almoz served as an operations officer in the Central Command and in 2007 he was appointed the Central Command's chief of staff. In November 2010, Almoz was appointed the head of the Civil Administration in the West Bank and three years later was appointed to his current role—the IDF Spokesman.
Almoz, a farmer by profession, has a bachelor's degree in Middle Eastern Studies from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and a master's in Military and Defense Studies, also from the Hebrew University.
