Riots erupted Wednesday morning in the Palestinian village of Silwad northeast of Ramallah in response to a Palestinian man being shot in by two Israeli settlers, during an altercation between the settlers and a group of Palestinians.
The vehicle of the settlers was damaged when about 20 masked men threw rocks at the cars on Route 60 near Silwad. In response, the two drivers got out of their car, with one of them firing in the air in an attempt to disperse the rioters.
A Palestinian man was shot in the back and sustained moderate injuries as a result of the firing. He was evacuated to Mount Scopus Hospital in Jerusalem, while the drivers were taken in for questioning by the Israel Police prior to being released in the afternoon.
Right-wing activist and the attorney representing the two detainees, Itamar Ben-Gvir, responded to the event by saying, “The two Jews who were forced to shoot claim that they acted out of self-defense and out of fear for their lives.” He added that “the two were attacked by dozens of rioters who continued to throw rocks at them even after they shot in the air.”
“The conduct of the police in suspecting them of committing a criminal offense is terrible,” continued Ben-Gvir. “The two of them deserve a citation of bravery and it is difficult to understand why they are being detained in a police station. Do the police prefer settlers in a coffin?”
Meanwhile, a 35-year-old woman was lightly wounded by rocks thrown at her vehicle on Route 60 near the al-Khader junction near Bethlehem. MDA medics treated her and then took her to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.
