The three paratroopers

Iconic Western Wall photo made into stamp

50 years after Jerusalem's unification during the Six-Day war, the Israel Postal Company declares it will issue a stamp featuring the famous photograph of paratroopers at the Western Wall, by recently deceased legendary photographer David Rubinger.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the unification of Jerusalem, the Israel Postal Company (IPC) decided to issue a stamp featuring David Rubinger's signature photograph Paratroopers at the Western Wall, taken shortly after Israeli paratroopers overtook and reached the Western Wall during the Six-Day War.

The Photograph has since become one of the symbols of that war's victory and the history of Israel.

The stamp will be printed as a limited edition, with only a few copies issued by the IPC. It will not be usable for sending letters.

Left to right, the photo features the faces of Zion Karasenti, Yitzhak Yifat and Haim Oshri. Today, they three are 72 years old. The stamp was given to them and to Rubinger's two children at a ceremony held at the Western Wall.

At the ceremony, IPC CEO Dan Goldstein said that "It is a great honor for me to present a token of appreciation to the paratroopers and to Rubinger's family, who in a literal flash became icons of the city's unification."

Yifat said that for him, the event comes full circle, in that his mother used to work for the IPC for many years.

Karasenti said that "Thanks to the photograph, I feel like I have been living in that emotional moment for 50 years."
