Rivlin expected to approve Olmert's request to lift release restrictions
President will likely okay request despite questions surrounding Olmert's involvement in the possession of classified documents allegedly to be used in an upcoming book, as he is not required to rule in accordance with Justice Ministry recommendation.
The request was made by Olmert's lawyers the day of his release and seeks to do away with requirements such as bi-monthly visits to police stations and prohibitions on overseas travel, allowing the former prime minister to return to his business interests.
The request will first be passed to the Ministry of Justice for consideration before being forwarded to the president for a final decision. The main question concerning the request now is whether or not the recent issue of Olmert being in possession of classified documents will torpedo the request.
However, the president is not required to accept the recommendation put forth by the Ministry of Justice, whatever it may be.
Should Rivlin choose to reject the appeal, Olmert's restrictive status will remain in place until May 2018.
