Rivlin says Iranian presence on northern border intolerable

Speaking at a southern IDF base as he overlooked a combined military drill with IDF chief Eisenkot, President Rivlin reiterates Israel 'has red lines' when it comes to Iran; thanks soldiers for protecting state, urges them to begin the new year without hate.

President Reuven Rivlin said Tuesday Israel would not tolerate any Iranian presence on its northern border, adding that despite world opinion that Iran can be reasoned with, “We are extremely concerned that Iran says that above all else Israel cannot exist, and we take these things seriously.”

Speaking with IDF soldiers at the artillery corps’ training division in the southern Shizafon military base, Rivlin stressed that his country was “informing the entire world that the State of Israel has red lines and the presence of Iran on the border obligates us to inform the world that this cannot (be allowed—ed.)

After Viewing a combined military drill comprising infantry troops, tanks and combat engineers, the president himself took control of the central walkie talkie to deliver his new year wishes to the soldiers as Israel and Jews around the world prepare to celebrate the new year of Rosh Hashanah.

“You did great, Well done. Have a good and successful year. Thank you all for being here for us. Thanks to you everything is ok,” he said.

Rivlin then met with one for the tank crews and told its members: “Everyone in his tank is protecting the state, whether that’s in Sajur, Hebron, Ashkelon or Jerusalem. Throughout the country, people sleep much better when they know there is someone they can trust. Your preparedness is the guarantee of security for the entire State of Israel.

“Let us begin the year with the understanding that we need to add one more thing to the ten commandments that everyone has in his heart. Let’s adopt the commandment ‘don’t hate.’ We should start thinking about one another, hearing one another even when we don’t agree,” he said.
